A drone attack on the breakaway region of Moldova, which borders Ukraine, has raised questions in a country already preoccupied with the potential spread of the ongoing war to the west on its territory.
Authorities in Transnistria have shared footage on their social media channels that appears to show the moment a drone crashes into a stationary helicopter on a military base, causing a fire.
Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized state controlled by pro-Russian separatists from the city of Tiraspol. It is located in eastern Moldova, on the border with Ukraine. Russia has about 1.500 troops, including about 400 peacekeepers, deployed in Transnistria.
Relations between Tiraspol and the Moldovan government in the capital Chisinau, which has sought closer ties with Europe and is a candidate for European Union membership, have become increasingly strained. The more than two-year war in Ukraine has increased tensions and concerns in Chisinau.
An image released by the Perviy Transnistria channel, run by unrecognized authorities in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region, appears to show the aftermath of a drone attack on a stationary helicopter in the territory.
The authorities in Chisinau said that they could not confirm the incident with certainty.
