The Republican presidential candidate has addressed concerns he would pull out of NATO if he returns to the White House.
Donald Trump said the US will remain in the military alliance and come to the aid of a bloc member if they are attacked so long as other countries “play fair”.
“NATO has to treat the US fairly, because if it’s not for the United States, NATO literally doesn’t even exist,” Mr Trump told GB News.
Mr Trump previously caused controversy when he said he would allow Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to any NATO countries failing to meet defence spending criteria.
Under Article 5 of NATO’s membership treaty, those within the alliance are obligated to help other member states if they are attacked by a hostile nation.
When asked if the US under his possible future leadership would fulfil this commitment, Mr Trump said: “Yeah. But you know, the United States should pay its fair share, not everybody else’s fair share.
“We have an ocean in between some problems… we have a nice big, beautiful ocean, [NATO] is more important for [European countries], they will take an advantage.”
