Lee Anderson said talk of a Tory leadership election was “absolute nonsense”.
The deputy chairman of the Conservative Party said that such talk was “playing right into the Labour Party’s hands” and even if there was a contest Rishi Sunak would win “hands down”.
So far only one Tory MP, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, has said publicly that they have submitted a letter of no confidence. Dame Andrea said yesterday that six other MPs had told her they intended to submit letters.
Asked if the Tories were in yet another leadership crisis, Mr Anderson told GB News: “Let me just tell you now, here on GB News, that’s nonsense. There’s no way there’s going to be a leadership contest. We don’t need a leadership contest, we need to let Rishi crack on with the job.
“I think there’s one letter gone in… and this is the thing, if there was a leadership election Rishi would win, hands down, as simple as.”
He added: “Talk of a leadership election at this stage is absolute nonsense. It’s playing right into the Labour Party’s hands.”
