Ukraine-based military groups, allegedly made up of Russian partisans, say they have carried out an incursion across Russia’s western border.
The Freedom of Russia Legion and the Siberian Battalion both claimed on Telegram that they had launched attacks from Ukraine.
“We will take our land from the regime centimetre by
centimetre,” the Legion said.
The incursions reportedly targeted the Belgorod and Kursk regions in the early hours of this morning.
Russia’s defence ministry told state media its forces prevented a “violation” of its borders and that it forced the armed groups to retreat with significant losses.
Sky News is working to independently verify the accounts.
Andriy Yusov, a Ukrainian intelligence spokesperson, told Ukraine’s 24 Channel the groups’ operations were independent of Ukraine, and said a third unit, the Russian Volunteer Corps, was also involved.
